Hi,
I am the user of Seagate recent product - 1 Tb HDD ST31000340AS. After using it for 2 weeks, the HDD cant be recognized in BIOS. I wonder if someone has a solution for fixing the HDD.
After asking Singaporean company for data recovery, they response was :
"Our data recovery specialist had done an evaluation on your hard disk. There are multiple file structure damage and read write errors on the hard disk due to a head misalignment. The firmware and translator on the hard disk is also corrupted. We will need to use an identical head to replace the head in the hard disk our clean lab, reload the firmware and fix the translator to enable data retrieval. Data should be recoverable if translator corruption is not too severe"
It looks like they could recover the data. However, the price is >10x of HDD price. They quote 1530,- SGD (= 1050 USD or 760 EUR).
I am so lost, cant afford the data recovery costs...

Hi Zenskai,
Its good idea to take the forum out of Seagate sites. As Seagate moderators not only delete some of posts, but also close the discussions.
Maybe it would be a good idea to copy the posts to some other sites, before moderators do not delete them.
Ok, lets discuss how to solve the Seagate HDD problems on other internet sites. No one here is rich to pay >1000 USD for data recovery.

Purchased Seagate 500GB 16MB cache.
Barcode sticker on outside of box:
500GB 16MB SATA HD
ST3500641AS-RK
S/N: 9QM6861Q
PN: 9BD648-5500 - bar code 763649002346
drive inside box:
S/N: 9QM6861Q funny it's the same serial number
ST3500320AS nothing but very bad info on this drive on forums
PN: 98X154-335 funny different part number for same serial number
Firmware: SD15 again nothing but bad about this firmware
Date code:09083 Site Code: KRATG
WWN: 5000C5000D86D7A2
OEM drive thought they were for installing in system for resale! Not to be sold by major retailer AAFES Exchange's
Don't tell me it's acceptable to substitute drives in box. Two quite different drives, one in box expected to last, maybe TWO MONTHS.
Be carefull out there with what you buy!!!!!!

Bravissimo, Seagate!
The HDD still doesn't work. The case escalated to support on NOVEMBER 27th - still no answer (24hours... on Saturn maybe?) The topic - closed. The only actions of seagate's stuff - deleting and correcting the messages.
Great job! I do not think, that any friend of mine will purchase any Seagate products in future...
