I just purchased this external hard drive after being told by Apple that any external hard drive would work with my Mac. Now, the box says that it is for Windows and that a Mac unit can be purchased. Do I really need to return this hard drive or can I reformat it and use it with the Mac?
Did you try it? I am in the same situation. I have a new Free Agent Desk for Windows XP/Vista and want to know if I can use it for my IMac. I got a great deal on the Free Agent and would like to use it to back up my Mac. If not I'll have to return it and find some other method for backup.
Your drive will work fine with Time Machine if you have that. You just won't get any preinstalled backup software for Mac. The version on your drive is for Windows only.
I installed it and it is working fine. It was really easy.
I just plugged it in and immediately I was asked if I wanted Time Machine to use the device as my backup unit. It said that if I did, I would have to reformat the drive. I clicked reformat and within 15 seconds, Time Machine started counting down until the next backup. It has been backing up automatically ever since.
