I have a 1TB drive affected by the bug according to the "Check serial"-app.

The DriveDetect tool says:

 Model: ST31000340AS, Serial: <snip>, Firmware: SD15

This page says:

Note: With regards to Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 SATA, and DiamondMax 22 drives sold in December 2008, please reference Firmware Recommendations for Seagate Drives to see if a firmware update is recommended for your drive.

But, the link does not work.

I have mailed discsupport@seagate.com for instructions on how to minimize the risc for dataloss.

An update is now available here:

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951

It involves burning a bootable cd.

Wish me luck, going down to try this now ...

Will report back when/if the computer boots afterwards.

The update failed.

It fails with a "SIGSEGV", and the text

"Error: Specific model not found. ST31000340AS expected."

Running the option S) correctly finds the drive ST31000340AS.

The menu after rebooting with the downloaded CD image:

The result of option A):

Now heading out to find an open store, buying another disk as soon as possible, to replace this one with.

The disk still boots but only after a few retries.

The label of the disk:

 The label on the disk.
